The ruined farmhouse of Auchlany typifies many abandoned dwellings in the Highlands of Scotland. Although there were indeed victims of the Clearances in Perthshire this was not always the case. Economic hardship frequently drove those who lived here to leave in search of work elsewhere in Britain or abroad. Sometimes it was just the spirit of adventure which took them to far-off lands like America and Australia. A burn runs close by the house which is positioned so that a gap in the hills allows sunshine to reach it even in the middle of winter.
